Besides, I did the interview of the lyricist Yogesh at the beginning of my career and it was a pleasant experience like his songs.

The beginning of the film involves the felicitation of Dr. Bhaskar (Amitabh Bachchan), after the book he wrote called Anand was successful. Bhaskar is a cancer specialist and he reveals that the book does not talk about a fictitious person, but an actual person named Anand.
Then he tells the story of Anand. Bhaskar had just completed his training as an oncologist and treats the poor without charging them. He is very dismayed to see that he could not cure every health issue in the world. He often turns gloomy after observing poverty, suffering and illness surrounding him.
He is a straightforward doctor, who does not treat the imaginary health problems of the rich people. On the other hand, his friend Dr. Kulkarni (Ramesh Deo) always comes forward to treat the imaginary illnesses of the rich and uses the money in the treatment of the poor people. Kulkarni introduces Anand (Rajesh Khanna) to Bhaskar. Anand has lymphocarcoma of the intestine, a rare cancer.
He has a cheerful personality and though he knows the truth that he would not survive beyond 6 months, stays happy and makes others around him happy with his casual attitude. Bhaskar is soothed by his joyful and vivacious nature. Both of them have contrasting personalities and become fast friends. Anand’s health condition continuously gets worse, but he desires not to spend the time that is left with him on a hospital bed.
So he moves around freely and helps everyone. He has already moved in to live with Bhaskar. One day, he gets to know that Bhaskar has been in love with Renu (Sumita Sanyal), who had come to him for the treatment of pneumonia. He helps Bhaskar to reveal his love for her and persuades Renu’s mother to give permission for their marriage.
It is around this time that Anand sings this song. Song: Music is composed by late Salil Chaudhary and lyrics are by Yogesh. The song goes thus, “What kind of a puzzle is this life? Sometimes it makes us laugh, sometimes it makes us cry.
Sometimes the mind does not wake up and runs behind dreams. One day the dream traveler goes beyond dreams. What kind of a puzzle is this life? Sometimes it makes us laugh, sometimes it makes us cry.
People who have arranged fairs here, they have suffered happiness and sorrow together. They select silence, they leave to go somewhere else alone. What kind of a puzzle is this life? Sometimes it makes us laugh, sometimes it makes us cry.” Video: Cinematography is by Jaywant Pathare. The song begins when Rajesh Khanna buys some helium balloons for himself in the beach and lets a few of them fly away.
He begins the song while walking on the sands and holding the few balloons he has. It is symbolic in the sense that he says, “Some of my time has gone. I have only some time in my hands.” Then he lets go of all the balloons.
Through the song he consoles himself regarding his cancer. He walks on the beach inhaling fresh air, which might help his health at least a little. He has accepted his situation. At the end of the song, Rajesh Khanna is seen walking towards the sea. The symbolism in the song is very fascinating. Artists: Manna Dey sings the playback, while Rajesh Khanna lip-synchs.
